Can I Drink Coke Zero on Cambridge Diet

Lots of customers have reached out to us regarding the changes to Coke Zero's ingredients and the impact that this recipe change may have on maintaining ketosis. With so much conflicting information out there, we asked our Nutritional Expert, Ashley English, to clarify exactly what this means for particularly our Total Solution customers.

First, what is ketosis?

Ketosis is a state of metabolism whereby your body uses fat rather than carbohydrates as its main fuel source. Our Total Solution Plan can stimulate fasted ketosis because you're eating fewer calories than normal.

Remember, however, that you do not need to enter into a state of ketosis in order to lose weight on our diet.

  • Typically has a positive appetite-suppressing effect
  • Can (after the first few days) make you feel more energised!

And, what are ketones?

What has changed?

Coca-Cola has announced it is to change its Coke Zero recipe and rename it Coca-Cola Zero Sugar in the UK to make it "taste more and look more" like the original Coke.

Ahead of the now-implemented Sugar Tax in the UK, Coca-Cola wanted to encourage people to reduce their sugar intake: did you know, for instance, that the original 'Coca-Cola' recipe contained nine teaspoons of sugar in a 330ml can.

The refreshed Coca-Cola Zero Sugar drink includes sodium citrate, which can refer to any of the three sodium salts of citric acid, an ingredient of the product used as a preservative.

What is citric acid?

Citric acid is a weak organic acid found in citrus fruits. It is a natural preservative and is also used to add an acidic (sour) taste to foods and soft drinks.

How does citric acid affect nutritional ketosis?

The theory that citric acid consumption inhibits ketosis is not clear-cut.

It is thought citric acid may affect ketosis by impacting metabolism within the liver, primarily during the Krebs Cycle (Citric Acid Cycle) which citric acid is an intermediate of.

Some people have reported that while they have seen citric acid consumption prevent them entering ketosis and increase appetite, they have not seen it impact ketosis once it has been established.

What does this mean for me?

Everybody is different, in size, shape and sensitivity to certain foods.

Even if avoiding citric acid, establishing and maintaining ketosis varies from person to person. It is important for the individual to determine their threshold and establish whether citric acid has any effect on ketosis, appetite or fat loss on a ketogenic diet.

(However, this does not mean that coca-cola zero will stop you from losing weight – as long as you are in a significant calorie deficit, you will lose weight!)

Is there anything I can use instead?

While water is always the best way to stay hydrated, we know that occasionally you might need a sweet fix. Many Total Solution customers also use Dr. Pepper Zero as a sweet fix to help them on their way. Other brands such as Tesco and Asda's own brand Diet Coke and Sainsburys Sparkling Water, along with green tea are also suitable (but always check the label).
